When most people think of Cancun they are thinking of the Hotel Zone, located outside of Cancun proper, which is a narrow isthmus of approximately 1 km wide and 20 km long, upon which all of Cancun’s most popular all inclusive hotels, nightclubs and restaurants can be found stretched along the Boulevard Kukulcan. The sparkling blue waters of the Caribbean are on one side of the narrow strip of land and a lagoon, ideal for watersports, is on the other. While you will find that many of the hotels situated along this ribbon of beach and highway have activities, entertainment, dining and a disco on-site for guests, you will likely want to explore other hotels and clubs and will find that the taxis are readily available and affordable.
You may find everything you need for the perfect Cancun vacation right inside the hotel zone, but you may also want to explore the city center, or El Centro. Like many Spanish cities, the actual city of Cancun is not laid out in a grid system, as you might expect in a North American city, but in a circular or web-like pattern, centering on a series of squares. The city squares usually consist of a park and monument, and is a popular meeting place for locals to discuss politics and local current events. If you venture into the city of Cancun, you should either go by taxi or in an organized excursion, as the streets are confusing and you can become easily lost.
