For many, Mexico is not epitomized by bullfighting, or by large sombreros, or by Mayan ruins, but by the image of a lone diver plunging from a cliff top into the sparkling blue waters below. Acapulco, Mexico’s original vacation destination, first gained popularity in the 20’s and ‘30’s and reached its peak in the 50’s and 60’s.

Acapulco is experiencing a rebirth and is once again the vacation destination for jetsetters, celebrities and other fun seekers. The hotels and resorts have undergone million dollar refits, the dining is fabulous and the beaches have been restored to their original splendour. Flights to Acapulco are frequent and are available from all major gateways in Canada.

When planning your Acapulco holiday, there are a number of factors to consider. All of the action centers around Acapulco Bay, which curves inward like a crescent. At the top of the crescent is Zona Dorada where most of the luxury hotels, resorts, boutiques and restaurants are located; this area is sometimes called the Mexican Sunset Strip. In the evenings, the Zona Dorada becomes filled with people, locals and tourists alike, and a giant street party usually takes place.

At the opposite end of the crescent is Acapulco Viejo, or Old Acapulco, where the majority of the older, budget properties are located. In between the two sections are miles of beautiful beaches, many all inclusive resorts, hotels, restaurants, bars and cafes. There is also a section known as Zona de Amantes which is very exclusive and is filled with only the most lavish hotels and clubs; whatever your budget, you’ll find a good fit in Acapulco.
